Why is Lord Shiva or mother Durga called Trinayana and Trinayani ?

'Mahadev and mother Durga' have three eyes hence they are called 'Trinayan and Trinayani'.

There are different aspects of this trinayan, on the one hand it means that Mahadev is keeping an eye on the trilok i.e. "heaven, mortal, underworld" by his trinity. On the other hand, by this trinayan he has been referred to as Trikaladharshi, meaning that nothing of the 'past, future, present' is unknown to him.

According to a story in Shiva Purana, once Goddess Parvati grabbed Mahadev's eyes from behind with her hand, which caused darkness to descend on the whole earth (the reason is that according to the Puranas, the moon and sun are in the two eyes of Mahadev). Mahadev immediately opened his third eye to dispel the darkness, which caused a terrible fire to burn all around (because fire resides in his third eye).

In Puranam, Mahadev burnt 'Kamadeva' with his third eye.

Creation is never possible without lust, but when man becomes lustful, that lust is the cause of his destruction. So knowledge control over work is necessary. In reality, the third eye of Mahadev is the symbol of knowledge which is called the 'eye of knowledge'. So the moment the eye of knowledge opens, the cum is burnt.

Why is Lord Shiva or mother Durga called Trinayana and Trinayana?

We all have this eye of knowledge like Mahadev, but it is still closed. The moment our eyes of knowledge open, all vices will be destroyed.
