If Lord Krishna is the only Supreme Lord, then in the Vedas it is a far cry to call Lord Krishna the greatest Lord, why there is no mention of Lord Krishna ?

           There is no doubt that Lord Krishna is the Supreme Lord. 'Lord Shiva' himself has described his majesty in the 178th chapter of the 'Dandharma' parva, which is part of the 'Anushasan parva' of the Mahabharata.




Shrimad Bhagavad Gita

Chapter 4: Jñāna Karm Sanyās Yog


श्रीभगवानुवाच |
यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत |
अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् || 7||
परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् |
धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय सम्भवामि युगे युगे || 8||

Translation - Whenever there is a decline in righteousness and an increase in unrighteousness, O Arjun, at that time I manifest myself on earth. To protect the righteous, to annihilate the wicked, and to reestablish the principles of dharma I appear on this earth, age after age.


                    Sanatan Bhagwan Sri Hari Vishnu 'Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narsingha' incarnated in different forms and established dharma. "On the 28th Dwapar yug of Vaibasvat Manvantar" he descended in full art, that is Krishna incarnation. So most of the devotees describe him as Krishna. Although his Vishnu form is actually the Parambrahm form. For this reason his name Krishna is not mentioned in the Vedas because the Vedas were written before him. So if you did not find his Krishna name in the Vedas, you would easily find him by the name Vishnu.


                 In the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Srimad-Bhagavatam Gita, he is called the Supreme Lord, so let us see if the interpretation of the above texts matches the Vedas.


Let us first see what is said about Lord Vishnu in the Vedas and Upanishads


Rigved 1:22

त्रीणि पदा वि चक्रमे विष्णुर्गोपा अदाभ्यः । अतो धर्माणि धारयन्॥१८॥

Translation - Visnu, the Guardian, he whom none deceiveth, made three steps; thenceforth Establishing his high decrees.


तद्विष्णोः परमं पदं सदा पश्यन्ति सूरयः । दिवीव चक्षुराततम्॥२०॥

तद्विप्रासो विपन्यवो जागृवांसः समिन्धते । विष्णोर्यत्परमं पदम्॥२१॥

Translation - The princes evermore behold that loftiest place where Visnu is, Laid as it were an eye in heaven.This, Vishnu's station most sublime, the singers, ever vigilant, Lovers of holy song, light up.


Yajurved 31

श्रीश्च ते लक्ष्मीश्च पत्न्यावहोरात्रे पार्श्वे नक्षत्राणि रूपमश्विनौ व्यात्ताम् ।

 इष्णन्निषाणामुं म इषाण सर्वलोकं म इषाण ॥२२॥

Translation - Beauty and Fortune are thy wives: each side of thee are Day and Night. The constellations are thy form: the Asvins are thine open jaws. Wishing, wish yonder world for me, wish that the Universe be mine.


Kaatha Upanishad 1:3

आशा प्रतीक्षे संगतं सूनृतां च इष्टापूर्ते पुत्रपशूंश्च सर्वान् ।

 एतद् वृड्क्ते पुरुषस्याल्पमेधसो यस्यानश्नन् वसति ब्राह्मणो गृहे ॥८॥

্तिসাথस्त्रो रात्रीर्यदवात्सीर्गृहे मे अनश्नन् ब्रह्मन्नतिथिर्नमस्य : । 

नमस्ते अस्तु ब्रह्मन् स्वस्ति में अस्तु तस्मात् प्रति त्रीन् बरान् वृणीष्व ॥९॥

Translation - But whoso is possessed of a discriminating intellect and a restrained mind, and is ever pure, attains that goal from which he is not born again.But the man who has a discriminating intellect as his driver, and a controlled-mind as the reins, reaches the end of the path - that supreme state of Vishnu.


Not only this, the Virat Purush mentioned in the Vedas is actually Lord Krishna / Vishnu.


Atharva Ved 19:6

जगद्वीजपुरुष सूक्त

सहस्रबाहुः पुरुषः सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात्। स भूमिं विश्वतो वृत्वात्यतिष्ठद्दशाङ्गुलम् ॥१॥

Translation - Purusha hath a thousand arms, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet. On every side pervading earth he fills a space ten fingers wide.

Chapter 11: Viśhwarūp Darśhan Yog

श्रीभगवानुवाच |
पश्य मे पार्थ रूपाणि शतशोऽथ सहस्रश: |
नानाविधानि दिव्यानि नानावर्णाकृतीनि च || 5||

Translation - The Supreme Lord said: Behold, O Parth, my hundreds and thousands of wonderful forms of various shapes, sizes, and colors.

अर्जुन उवाच |

अनेकबाहूदरवक्त्रनेत्रं

पश्यामि त्वां सर्वतोऽनन्तरूपम् |
नान्तं न मध्यं न पुनस्तवादिं
पश्यामि विश्वेश्वर विश्वरूप || 16||

Translation - I see your infinite form in every direction, with countless arms, stomachs, faces, and eyes. O Lord of the universe, whose form is the universe itself, I do not see in you any beginning, middle, or end.

द्यावापृथिव्योरिदमन्तरं हि
व्याप्तं त्वयैकेन दिशश्च सर्वा: |
दृष्ट्वाद्भुतं रूपमुग्रं तवेदं
लोकत्रयं प्रव्यथितं महात्मन् || 20||

Translation - The space between heaven and earth and all the directions are pervaded by you alone. Seeing your wondrous and terrible form, I see the three worlds trembling in fear, O Greatest of all beings.


Atharva Ved 19:6

जगद्वीजपुरुष सूक्त

त्रिभिः पद्भिर्द्यामरोहत्पादस्येहाभवत्पुनः । तथा व्यक्रामद्विष्वङशनानशने अनु ॥२॥

Translation - He with three quarters rose to heaven here reappeared a fourth of him. Thence he strode forth on every side to all that eats not and that eats.


In the 'Dronaparva' of the Mahabharata, Lord Krishna has described his four forms.

"I observe the world from Badrikashram in one form or another," he said. (The form of God's care, which is buried in the world)

"In the second form I contain the whole creation from the abyss." (Tamasic form of God called 'Sheshnag' or 'Eternal')

"Thirdly, I keep an eye on all living beings from the unseen and give them their karmafal." (Formless Brahman)

"In the fourth form, I give strength to the whole world by being adorned with eternal adornment in Paramadham." (Chaturbhuj Narayan)

Atharva Ved 19:6

जगद्वीजपुरुष सूक्त

चन्द्रमा मनसो जातश्चक्षोः सूर्यो अजायत । मुखादिन्द्रश्चाग्निश्च प्राणाद्वायुरजायत ॥७॥

Translation - The Moon was gendered from his mind, and from his eye the Sun had birth. Indra and Agni from his mouth were born and Vāyu from his breath.

Chapter 10: Vibhūti Yog


श्रीभगवानुवाच |
न मे विदु: सुरगणा: प्रभवं न महर्षय: |
अहमादिर्हि देवानां महर्षीणां च सर्वश: || 2||

Translation - Neither celestial gods nor the great sages know my origin. I am the source from which the gods and great seers come.


Atharva Ved 19:6

जगद्वीजपुरुष सूक्त

तस्माद्यज्ञात्सर्वहुत ऋचः सामानि जज्ञिरे । छन्दो ह जज्ञिरे तस्माद्यजुस्तस्मादजायत ॥१३॥

Translation - From that great general sacrifice Richas and Sāma hymns were born; Therefrom the metres were produced: the Yajus had its birth from it.

Chapter 9: Rāja Vidyā Yog


श्रीभगवानुवाच |
अहं क्रतुरहं यज्ञ: स्वधाहमहमौषधम् |
मन्त्रोऽहमहमेवाज्यमहमग्निरहं हुतम् || 16||
पिताहमस्य जगतो माता धाता पितामह: |
वेद्यं पवित्रमोङ्कार ऋक्साम यजुरेव च || 17||

Translation - It is I who am the Vedic ritual, I am the sacrifice, and I am the oblation offered to the ancestors. I am the medicinal herb, and I am the Vedic mantra. I am the clarified butter, I am the fire and the act of offering. Of this universe, I am the Father; I am also the Mother, the Sustainer, and the Grandsire. I am the purifier, the goal of knowledge, the sacred syllable Om. I am the Ṛig Veda, Sāma Veda, and the Yajur Veda.


Yajurved 31

वेदाहमेतं पुरुषं महान्तमादित्यवर्णं तमसः परस्तात् ।

 तमेव विदित्वाति मृत्युमेति नान्यः पन्था विद्यते यनाय ॥१८॥

Translation - I know this mighty Purusha whose colour is like the Sun, beyond the reach of darkness. He only who knows him leaves Death behind him. There is no path save this alone to travel.

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita

Chapter 10: Vibhūti Yog


श्रीभगवानुवाच |
यो मामजमनादिं च वेत्ति लोकमहेश्वरम् |
असम्मूढ: स मर्त्येषु सर्वपापै: प्रमुच्यते || 3||

Translation - Those who know me as unborn and beginningless, and as the Supreme Lord of the universe, they among mortals are free from illusion and released from all evils.



Yajurved 31

रुचं ब्राह्म्यं जनयन्तो देवा अग्रे तदब्रुवन् । यस्त्वैवं ब्राह्मणो विद्यात्तस्य देवा असन्वशे ॥२१॥


Translation - Thus spake the Gods at first, as they begat the bright and holy One: The Brahman who may know thee thus shall have the Gods in his control.

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita

Chapter 4: Jñāna Karm Sanyās Yog


श्रीभगवानुवाच |
अजोऽपि सन्नव्ययात्मा भूतानामीश्वरोऽपि सन् |
प्रकृतिं स्वामधिष्ठाय सम्भवाम्यात्ममायया || 6||

Translation - Although I am unborn, the Lord of all living entities, and have an imperishable nature, yet I appear in this world by virtue of Yogmaya, my divine power.


Rigved 10:82

तमिद्गर्भं प्रथमं दध्र आपो यत्र देवाः समगच्छन्त विश्वे ।

 अजस्य नाभावध्येकमर्पितं यस्मिन्विश्वानि भुवनानि तस्थुः॥६॥

Translation - The waters, they received that germ primeval wherein the Gods were gathefed all together. It rested set upon the Unborn's navel, that One wherein abide all things existing.


According to the 'Bramhapuran', the first 'Hiranyagarbha' (radiant golden egg) originated in the navel of Lord Vishnu, in which Bramha was born. After living in Hiranyagarbha for 100 years, Bramha broke it and created Universe.
